Wrapping up the 2009 Wine Walk-Around Series: Great Wines for Budget Conscious Times

On Friday, November 13, we’ll conclude our 2009 look into wines for tough economic times. There are hundreds of wines readily available that are not only reasonable but well worth buying. For this Walk-Around we will be skipping around Europe, visiting a wine region or two in Germany, France, Italy and Spain and then back to the USA with a stop in Napa. We’ll taste examples that have been sourced using several buying strategies that get the best values.

Germany: The Mosel • Spain: Ribera del Duero • France: The Rhone, Languedoc and Chablis • US: Napa • Italy: Montalcino

A dozen wines served informally in our garden room with hors d’oeuvres to complement the wines.

Starts at 7:00pm. $49 per person (plus tax and gratuity)

Wines being poured

1) Chalone Monterey Sauvignon Blanc 2008:
Flavors of citrus, melon, and spice delight the palette and senses.
Monterey County:
The cool climate and morning fog of this northern Monterey location create a bright, mouth-watering Sauvignon Blanc.

2) Chalone Estate Chardonnay 2007:
There is a bright acidity that mingles with flavors of fleshy pear, apricot, a bit of apple and is marked by Chalone’s distinctive minerality.
Salinas Valley:

The well-drained limestone-based soils combine with a sunny, wind-cooled microclimate and limited rainfall to produce fruit of unique richness and character.

3) Edna Valley Chardonnay 2007:

Bright tropical fruit, fresh peach and green pear mark this fruit-driven chardonnay
San Luis Obispo:
The gray, clay soils and unique position of the Parragon Vineyard create ideal conditions for the Edna Valley Chardonnay

4) BV Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon 2005:

Well-integrated oak character heightens the aromas and laces the long, fruit-imbued finish.

Napa Valley:

The Rutherford American Viticultural Area (AVA), just 3.3 miles long and 2 miles wide, is a tiny jewel in the heart of Napa Valley.

5) A by Acacia Red Blend 2007:

This Syrah based Rhône-style blend is well-balanced and layered with aromas of rich dark cherry, plum and raspberry.
Carneros:
Distinguished by a cool microclimate dominated by wind and fog from the nearby Pacific Ocean, and by shallow, dense clay soils.

Wines being poured

1) ROBALINO
This Albarino has a seductive perfume of citrus, grapefruit, lemon peel and white peach, with pronounced floral and almond notes. The grape’s high extract carries these impressions onto a vivid palate which remains light, elegant and fresh. Mouth watering, this Albarino rounds out nicely with a long lingering finish.

2) CASTILLO DE MEDINA
Pale straw yellow with golden tones, clean and transparent, giving off freshness with aromas of tropical fruits (banana, pineapple). In the mouth it is fresh with a good flow. The finish is very long-lasting, leaving a pleasant sensation.

3) ARROCAL
Produced from estate grown vines, gravity drives all movements of must/wine to minimize hard tannins. Grapes are hand harvested, destemmed but not crushed, macerated for 10 days in temperature controlled tanks followed by aging in new and 1 year old, 50% French and 50% American oak barrels for 6 months. Bottled without filtration after a gentle egg-white fining.

4) PRIMA

This is a new wine made by Mariano Garcia, owner of Bodegas Maurodos, from vineyards planted in sandy clay soils in three different areas in Toro. The average age of the vines are 20 years old. Harvested by hand and selection of grapes in the vineyard. Aged for 11 months in oak barrels. Unfiltered. This wine shows the unmistakable touch of Mariano’s masterful use of oak whereby concentrated dark fruit aromas and toasted, spicy aromas from oak coexist and it is nearly impossible to tell one from the other.

5) Tierras de Luna 2004
Merlot and Cabernet are 18-year-old vines and Mencia are 50-year-old vines with yields ranging between 25-30 hectoliters/hectare. The vineyard is planted between 2,132 to 2,460 feet above sea level in calcerous clay and decomposed slate. The wine was aged for 16 months in 75% French oak and 25% American oak barrels from the finest tonnelieres. After the wines were aged in the barrel, they were fined using egg whites prior to bottling without any type of filtration.

6) Silvano Garcia Moscatel 2005
Harvested at the end of September. The wine is partially fermented at a cool temperature and stopped with a reduction of temperature and the addition of alcohol (light fortification). Residual sugar 170g/liter

Wines Being Poured

Weingut Thierry-Weber Grüner Vetliner “Optimum” 2006 – 275 cases
Kremstal, Austria

Handselected grapes; gently pressed and fermented temperature controlled in stainless steal tanks. Left on the lies for additional complexity until bottled in April. Single vineyard selection from the Weinzierlberg in Krems; almost 30 year old vines growing on the typical “Löss” soil of the region; very low yields (20 hl/hectare) to achieve highest quality. White pepper & pineapple; exotic aromatics on the palate, backed by the typical spiciness of the variety; elegant wine representing the typical Grüner Veltliner of the Kremstal region.

Clos Saron Viognier/Sauvignon Blanc “Carte Blanche” 2007 Organically Grown – 83 cases
Yuba County, CA (Northwest Central Valley in the Sierra Nevada foothills)

The fifth version of our white blend, this time with nearly equal proportions of Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, and
Chardonnay. Expansive nose of flowers, fruits, and herbs; medium body, with intense, rich flavors & lively acidity. This is fuller on the mid-palate and spicier than the last vintage. At this early stage the wine is primary (grapy) and strongly Viognier in character. The minerals do come back at the finish, though. Good balance and length. Bright, minerally, intense, & elegant, with good balance and a distinctive character. A food friendly wine, which will go through various phases of evolution while aging for 15+ years.

Wine Smith Cabernet Franc 2005 – Sustainable – 549 cases
Wine Smith Cellars, Sebastopol, CA

In 1993 Wine Smith wine makers decided to establish this challenging varietal as its signature grape – it’s a wine that requires skill to do well and is capable of great depth when properly made. Since then, Wine Smith has developed a reputation for some of California’s best Cabernet Francs. This is perhaps its finest to date. Joe Ramazotti’s living soil on the Alexander Valley floor produces unusually lush plum aromas and fine tannins, resulting in a generous sweet core of fruit and very little vegetal character. It is blended with a little Cabernet Sauvignon for a more fleshy structure. By contrast, Blue Rock Vineyard’s nearby serpentine hillside gives us an angular, aggressive component that frames and lends definition to the blend. During 15 months’ time in small French oak the blend developed intense spice and aromas and mineral energy classically associated with Chinon but with a graceful structure and roundness more often seen in St. Emillion.

Syrah “Roman Syrah” 2005 Organically Grown – 76 cases
Wine Smith Cellars, Sebastopol, CA

William Younger’s book, “Gods, Men and Wine” offers compelling evidence that the 1,000 year Roman winemaking tradition did not involve sulfites. In 2001 we decided to undertake an experiment in ancient winemaking, vinifying this robust syrah grown in high-altitude living granite with and without the modern sulfite addition all the experts tout as indispensible. The conventional lot, we found, was indeed cleaner, and even possessed a more solid structure. But it brought to mind a perfect but sterile construction with nobody home. Without sulfites, the same grapes offered up incredibly intricate aromatics full of mystery and soul. Encouraged by the experimental wine’s ability to hold up in the cellar, in 2003, we abandoned the use of sulfites in our Syrah. Since preserving the structure is critical to integrating its complex aromas, we did not fine or filter.

2001 Kerrigan Creek, Syrah
Lodi, CA

A killer syrah and hands down favorite wine of the 95.9 The Krush Radio – Sonoma County -
http://www.krsh.com/ wine country radio panel. Seductive roasted espresso, dark fruit, violet, cedar and chocolate on the nose, this rich, full bodied Syrah delivers a mouthful of blueberry, blackberry, spice, chewy chocolate, caramel and oak. The finish lingers with dark cocoa….yumm!!! Where’s the beef!!!!

Heinz Nikolai Riesling Auslese “Erbacher Honigberg” 2004 375ml (6 packs) – 100 cases
Rheingau, Germany

Handselected grapes like raisins with a lot of botrytis from a vineyard with 30 years old plants; very careful pressing; very long cold fermentation at 12° Celsius for 6 weeks to keep the enormous residual sugar. The Erbacher Honigberg is a south-westerly vineyard. The name has its origin in the tradition of producing honey on this hill. More Beerenauslese than Auslese, this is flambloyantly honeyed and viscous, with an complex array of spicy, peachy flavors, concentrated and balanced by a lively acidity.

I Look forward to seeing you there.
