Cape May Brewing Expanding
Cape May Brewing Company is pleased to announce that they are expanding their operation and shedding the nano-brewery title. They acquired a 6 barrel brewing system, six 15 barrel fermentors and all the necessary support equipment. As part of the plan they are also building a larger tasting room, which will be open for extended hours. The construction is expected to be completed by mid-June. Additionally, the brewery was awarded an Economic Development loan from Lower Township and the State of New Jersey to help aide in the expansion.
The company recently hired Mark McPherson as Assistant Brewer. The Cape May Brewery is pleased to have him as part of their small operation.
The brewery won its first blue ribbon on April 1st. The Cape May Brewing CIPA, or Centennial India Pale Ale, took first place for best IPA at the 2012 Atlantic City Beer Festival. It was a huge victory for the small brewery.
Tours and tastings are held regularly ever Saturday from 12-5. A BBQ vendor is now regularly out back with pulled pork and grilled sausages available.

It is light and crisp and generously hopped with Czech Saaz. Although a bit strong for the style (6%) it is an ideal sitting-on-the-deck quaffer. “Knockout Bock” will continue to pour ’til the popular “Woodbridge Light”, an American-style lager, will return. “Vintage Cherry Stout”, IPA, Amber and Golden continue to pour.

Guild Legislative Efforts Continue

Currently the legislature is in the budgeting process so other bill making has been put aside. Regular hearings begin again in mid-May and we’re hopeful to continue with the great progress we’ve made. We will be reaching out to all New Jersey craft beer consumers to ask for your help contacting your local lawmakers once things heat up again.

Garden State Craft Brewers Guild Newsletter – March 2012
Welcome to the Garden State Craft Brewers Guild Newsletter for March 2012 — keeping you posted on what’s brewing in New Jersey.
NJ Senate Committee Approves Small Brewer Bill 5-0
After a lot of give and take between the Guild and representatives of the beer wholesalers, liquor stores, restaurant association and liquor distributors, an amended version of our legislation cleared the committee 5-0. One of the big reasons for the vote was that each committee member’s office received more than 200 phone calls/emails from NJ consumers promoting the bill. We thank you for all your help.
There are still several more steps to go: vote in the full Senate, hearing/vote in the Assembly Committee, vote in the full Assembly and signature by the Governor. We’ll be reaching out to you to make your opinion heard before each of these steps. We’re hopeful that sometime later this year New Jersey will become a lot more friendly to craft brewers–and craft beer consumers.
JJ Bitting Introduces Commemorative Abbey Ale
On March 10th, as JJ Bitting Brewing Company celebrates 15 years in business, they will be introducing their commemorative Abbey Ale. It is an Abbey Single style (6.5% abv) dry hopped with Hallertau and fermented with Bastogne yeast. It is blonde in color and light in body carrying notes of plum and spice. The day will include a ceremonial tapping of a firkin (gravity pour) of this special ale to kick off the celebration.
For St. Patrick’s day JJ Bitting will be serving the “O’Halloran’s Irish Red Ale” (a slightly maltier libation with a different hop profile) to temporarily replace the ever-so-popular “Avenel Amber”. The “Barley Legal Barleywine” is already available at the taps weighing in at a hefty 9.1% and featuring flavors of vanilla, pear and an assertive (American) hop character. Also there will be the “Vintage XX Stout” (6.8%). This one has been aged for 4 months on oak and carries a distinctive tartness complimented by complex flavors of bitter chocolate and dried fruit. It’s a great one for those vintage beer enthusiasts.

Flying Fish Releases Exit 8 Chestnut Brown Ale
This long-delayed eighth stop on our multi-year trip to explore New Jersey though its beer and culture brings us to, coincidentally, Exit 8 and celebrates what puts the “Garden” in Garden State.
Did you know that New Jersey has more than 9,800 farms covering 790,000 acres? We’re in the top four nationally in blueberries, cranberries, spinach, peaches, bell peppers and head lettuce produced. Not bad for the most densely populated state. To celebrate Exit 8, one of our big farming areas, we’ve brewed a beer that uses a lost local ingredient chestnuts–and a popular current one–two varieties of local honey.
This full-bodied hybrid Belgian-style brown ale brings forward a nutty character from the chestnuts, accented by the flavors of honey, roasted barley and oat flakes. There’s a nice spiciness from the Mt. Rainier hops while the Chinooks add a touch of pine. Fuggles and Columbus round out the hop profile.
Exit 8 pairs perfectly with hearty foods like roast pork, sausages or a nice aged gouda.
Babe’s E.S.B. on Deck at Krogh’s
Krogh’s Restaurant & Brew Pub at 23 White Deer Plaza in Sparta will be introducing their latest Seasonal, Babe’s E.S.B. in the beginning of the month. And when April rolls around, Krogh’s has their “Best of Show” beer from the New Jersey State Fair — a maibok! Call them with questions or for reservations (973) 729-8428.

Cricket Hill Weathers the Storm
From the Cricket Hill Brewing Company news desk:
I know you have all been reading about Fairfield in all the papers with the incredible flooding that hurricane Irene has caused. They closed the highways into Fairfield and for 4 days no one was allowed in or out. The street we are on was flooded with over 3 feet of water! The buildings on both sides of us had over 4 in. in their offices and warehouse. The front half of our building had 4″ in the machine shops. We had nothing!!!!!!! Because GOD LOVES BEER!!!!
And just in time Tim Mason has returned from Doemens Brewing Academy in Munich Germany. He will be working here until he finds a brewery that wants its beers brewed in German!
So to show our thanks Cricket Hill has released our Fall Seasonal; Fall Festivus! This is a harvest Ale with a light amber color. It has a good balance of earthy malt with a blend of floral and pine hops in the nose. It is the way to spend an autumn afternoon and evening and into the night!
We also have put our Porter into Four Roses Bourbon barrels for its 3 month stay. We will be bottling it in November and it will be available in 22oz. bottles. Last years release was spectacular and this years should be even better!
We have submitted two of our beers, the East Coast Lager and the Cricket’s Nocturne, to the GABF for judging. We also will be serving our American Ale and our Small Batch Dubbel at the Cricket Hill Booth(H30). The Fall Festivus will be served at the New Jersey Booth! See you all there!!
For the 2nd year in a row Cricket Hill will have our beers at the MONDIAL DE LA BIERE in Strasbourg France. We are honored to have been asked back and with the help of Tony Forder and Steve Krawczuk our beers arrived safely!! Stay tuned for Cricket Hill’s infamous Colonel Blide’s in brand new 6-packs! As our distributors have told us…It’s about time!!!
Cheers,
Rick & John

Flying Fish Releases Exit 13 Belgian Chocolate Stout
The sixth in its series of beers celebrating New Jersey, focuses on an exit probably best known for it’s view of the Newark airport, but it is also home to the Port of Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal, one of the busiest in the world. Many food products come through the port, including the Belgian chocolate they used for what they’re calling an import/ export stout.
This fuller “export style” stout gives a sturdy base for the rich chocolate flavor. A mix of imported and domestic malts are highlighted by roastiness from dark wheat. An Irish ale yeast and Pacific Northwest hops combine to create an excellent dessert beer as well as one to share in the cool weather with friends. More information at exitseries.com.
New Jersey Beer Co. Says Brewery Glassware is Nice, Exclusive Access is Even Better
For the beer lover there is an endless supply of gift ideas that crop up around this time of year. Glassware, bottle openers, books, apparel and even beer itself are all great ideas. The New Jersey Beer Co. has gotten a little creative with its holiday offerings and is selling memberships to its Reserve Club, an exclusive group that is eligible for insider benefits and the opportunity to brew on NJBC’s 10-barrel system.
The first 200 people to sign up for the $100 memberships will receive a second year in the club at no additional cost. Members will receive a growler of each of the brewery’s four seasonal beers before they go on sale to the public as well as a first chance to sample and purchase small-batch special releases. A brewery t-shirt and 20% off all merchandise from the brewery store for the duration of membership is also included.
Steinberg plans to hold several members-only events at the North Bergen, NJ brewery and regular opportunities to brew alongside the New Jersey Beer Co. staff, something many home brewers will appreciate. “We want to give people a chance to experience the brewery in a deeper way,” said Matt Steinberg, the brewery president. “This is more than the standard tour and tastings we currently offer, it’s really a chance to be part of the brewery family and connect with like-minded people.”

Flying Fish Releases Exit 4 American Trippel in 6-packs

Exit 4 was a gold medal winner at last October’s Great American Beer Festival and was also named Best Belgian Beer Brewed in America by Mens Journal. A Belgian-style Trippel then hopped with plenty of American hops, Exit 4 has a hazy golden hue and the aroma of citrus with hints of banana and clove. Flying Fish Releases Exit 1
For the third stop on their multi-year trip to explore the state of New Jersey through its beer and culture, Flying Fish journeys to Exit 1 for Bayshore Oyster Stout.
Oysters have had a long association with stout in the United Kingdom. This tradition was gradually lost to the rise of pale ales and overharvesting. Exit 1 celebrates this tasty combination and New Jersey’s history as one-time oyster supplier to the nation. Their version is an “export style” stout brewed with oysters. The creamy chocolate flavor harmonizes with the minerals from the oyster shells. An Irish ale yeast contributes a bit of fruitiness and a dry crispness. This richer, fuller stout is perfect for cold weather and to share with friends over great food. Not to mention with a few oysters on the half shell.
This limited edition beer is available in 750 ml bottles.
