The Frog Re-Born

The Frog and The Peach Restaurant announces a change of ownership. Betsy Alger and Jim Black, founders of the restaurant and proprietors for 29 years, have sold the business to Bruce Lefebvre, Frog Executive Chef since 2001.

The Frog and The Peach has consistently received accolades throughout its history. Alger and Black’s creative sensibilities and flair for reinvention kept the restaurant feeling fresh and always on the cutting edge of local and national trends. “It is time now to move on to new ventures and adventures. We leave a well established operation that will thrive with new energy and a fresh face.”

The restaurant will be in excellent hands. Lefebvre actually began his professional career at The F&P, starting as a line cook the day after graduation from The Culinary Institute of America. Leaving to hone his craft in New York, he worked for Charlie Palmer at Aureole; stagiered at Daniel and Lespinasse and returned to The Frog in 2000.

Since becoming Executive Chef eleven years ago, Chef Bruce has been recognized as one of the leading chefs in the region.

The culinary and management teams will also remain in place, maintaining consistency and leading the restaurant forward: General Manager Jim Mullen, Sous Chef Mike Fortino; Pastry Chef Joseph Erdely and Event Manager Jack Tagmouti.

A New Owner at The Frog and The Peach

The Frog and The Peach Restaurant is announcing a change of ownership. Betsy Alger and Jim Black, founders of the restaurant and proprietors for 29 years, are selling the business to Bruce Lefebvre, their Executive Chef since 2001.

Betsy Alger and Jim Black were bold enough back in the early 1980s to set up shop on the hope and promise that New Brunswick would rise up from the ashes of urban decay.

The Frog and The Peach has consistently received accolades throughout its history. Alger and Black’s creative sensibilities and flair for reinvention have kept the restaurant feeling fresh and always on the cutting edge of local and national trends.

Since becoming Executive Chef eleven years ago, Chef Bruce has consistently been recognized as one of the leading chefs in the state.

“I am honored to carry on the tradition and reputation of The Frog and The Peach, and I certainly plan to tap into Jim and Betsy’s experience and creativity, knowing that they are just a phone call away.”

The culinary and management teams will also remain in place, maintaining consistency and leading the restaurant forward: General Manager Jim Mullen, Sous Chef Mike Fortino; Pastry Chef Joseph Erdely and Event Manager Jack Tagmouti.

Betsy Alger and Jim Black are grateful for having had dedicated employees, many of whom have gone on to assume top spots in the industry and successful restaurants of their own; thanking each and every current and past alumnus for being part of The Frog family. They thank their loyal guests for decades of patronage. They wish Bruce Lefebvre much success in his new role at the helm of The Frog and The Peach.

Mark Altom “Beer vs. Wine Show Down Dinner”
Friday February 3, 2012. $115 all inclusive.

Whoever would have guessed that wine maven Mark Altom also drinks beer! This dinner is going to take a larger than usual team of F&P professionals to pull off! Each course of the dinner will be matched with one beer and one wine: attendees will vote for the best pairing. Our beloved regular Mark Altom will be choosing the wines and his colleague Steve Ashton, the opposing beers. Chef Bruce Lefebvre has devised the menu (even-handedly of course). GM/Wine Guy Jim Mullen has enlisted the talents of Head Bar Tender Phil Fazio for his expertise on beer. Let the game begin!

On the Burner for early 2012

  • Draft Beer returns to The F&P. We’re not a ‘shot and beer’ joint but we do have some really great beers. Starting in early January, we wil be offering Hand crafted, small batch beer on tap. Just a couple at a time, in addition to our bottled beers; optimally fresh, something you can’t find everywhere, something special.
  • Local Seafood Tasting Menu. Replacing the Game Tasting on or around January 11, Chef Bruce will be introducing a 5 Course Winter Seafood Tasting Menu. Yes, out of Point Pleasant and Cape May, while the summer crowds are long gone, the fishing boats are still going out into the cold Atlantic to bring in an abundance of cold water seafood. Among possible selections are monkfish, scallops, squid, fluke, golden tile, lobster, clams, black sea bass, mackerel, whiting, and porgy. Available with or without wine paired to each course.
  • Valentine’s Day: Tuesday February 14. A Special Prix Fixe Menu. 3-Course plus Chef Amuse. Or make it a weekend celebration and dine a la carte Friday – Monday.
  • Mullen on Wine: The Great Wine Regions of Italy in Three Classes. Fridays in March: 16, 23 & 30
The sequel to the 2010 French wines class, General Manager and Wine guy Jim Mullen shares his passion and knowledge about wine, this year landing in Italy. The course can be taken as a series of 3 or just a class or two. Also included in the grand-package is the Italian Wine Dinner in April. Choose how much or how little you want to participate in.
    $130 for all three classes
For all 3 classes and dinner on April 14, $235
    $55 for individaul class
    Dinner seperately $125

Sherry is the most neglected of the great wines of the world, the most misunderstood and therefore, the greatest value. We tend to connect it with the aunt in the mystery novel: simple, sticky stuff, drunk as an apertif or with dessert. In fact, sherry is naturally a dry wine and surprisingly, the finest sherries offer a tremendous pairing with all sorts of savory dishes.
From the outstanding sherry shipper Emilio Lustau, we present a whole range of styles paired with each course of our Game Menu. Prepared to be amazed.

August Tapas and More Summer Happenings

Tapas: with Bruce and a Slow Roasted Suckling Pig
Summer Evening in the Garden
Spanish Wines and Sherries

Friday August 19
5 to 10 pm
A la carte pricing and informal, communal seating, good cheer

Bruce will be preparing Iberian-style delicacies, from local ingredients, to order. The pig, slow roasted, will be well cooked before-hand.

Jim, still basking in glow of his spring trip to Spain will be pouring an assortment of wines that tickled his fancy. A great chance to sample a wide array of tapas with hand-selected wines. There will be recommended pairings for each dish: from the crisp Alberinos of the Atlantic coast to savory, almost black Priorats (perfect for your Suckling Pig!)

And then there’s the Sherries: a wide range of authentic styles from only the best producers: crisp Finos, tangy Manzanillas, dry Amontillados and aged Olorosos that pair with an astonishing range of savory dishes. These are not the treacly, sweet cream-styles of somebody’s auntie. Without doubt, the most undervalued world-class wines out there.

August: The Frog Days of Summer!

We know that many of our regular guests head off to the shore or other vacations in August and that New Brunswick is more the place to get away from than spend time in. But that’s not everyone and that’s not all the month long. So, we have a hook for those not going fishing!

Dine at The Frog and The Peach (dining room or garden) any lunch or dinner (with main course and/or Prix Fixe menu) and get an invitation to come back any lunch or dinner through September 4, 2011 and get TWO for the price of ONE Entrees!

Call for a reservation or just walk-in.

Sure there is some fine print but nothing out of the ordinary: Valid for use the dining room or the garden, not at the bar. Not valid with other promotions or for prix fixe menus. Lesser priced main course is the complimentary one.
